Holiday Heat : Women that inspire

by kranARI

I have always been inspired by strong, talented women who are not afraid to speak their mind and express themselves fearlessly through the arts. Actresses like Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore know how to keep their private lives private but somehow they have never fallen short of being able to bring their passion to the screen. Women like these are role models to younger generations, not just because of their talent, but mostly because they are fearless – openminded and true risk takers. The choose movies based on instinct, they like to work with people who will enrich their craft and they don’t worry about money, fame or awards. These are the people I have always looked up to artistically and personally: women that I find intriguing.

This year, there are some new women who have impressed with their talent, ideas, courage and passion. These are my top 3 inspiring women of the year.

1. CHELY WRIGHT

Chely Wright

Chely has been the swan amongst the murky waters of country music – an artist who has chosen to defy the odds and inspire with her courage and openness after facing years and years of self-imposed oppression and shame. Wright is officially the first country singer to publicly and openly announce her sexuality and fight for the rights of homosexual women. I absolutely love the honestly that follows this girl, both in her book and in her interviews. She candidly talks about her struggle as a country singer to come out to her friends, family and fans, how she feared her career would come to an instant end and how religion affected her to the point of self-hatred and loathing. It was only when she found herself with a gun in her mouth that she decided to change her life around. Her story is pure and multi-faceted and I strongly suggest you pick up a copy of her book “Like me” and read its wonderful review written by Heather Hogan on AfterEllen.com

2. TINA FEY

Tina Fey

How often is it that you find a woman on television that is beautiful, funny, cultured, smart AND talented. I mean, Fey has beaten the odds and has built her success though the creation of a hit show (30 Rock), multiple years on the popular TV series SNL (Saturday Night Live) and has lately sealed the deal by appearing in several movies on the big screen. Her intelligence is a force to be reckoned with and her wonderful sense of humour and improvisational talent are only the cherry on the cake. Only by watching scenes from the movie “Date Night” will you be able to appreciate the fine art of improvisation and great comedic timing – something which she shares and bring alive with the help of her co-star Steve Carell. A great Tina Fey interview to watch is in an older CuetheArtist article entitled “Comedy Special”. I am definitely in awe of this woman as an artist but also admire the fact that she has been able to achieve so much, and such quality work by such a young age while simultaneously having a family. If only we could all put our talents to good use and be as proactive as she has been…

3. LADY GAGA

Lady Gaga

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta has been an unstoppable force this past year. She has been artistically compared to the like of Madonna and her popularity to that of the Beatles. I guess what really turns me on about this woman and that she works really really hard and that she is dedicated and passionate. I have to admit that her dedication and artistry is sometimes over the top but more artists than ever before have admitted her undeniable talent and claim to have been greatly influenced by her. The driving force behind “Haus of Gaga” as she calls herself and her posse definitely comes from the woman herself. Call it a drive to be famous, known, accepted, successful – my impression is that she simply wants to work – the only difference between her and other artists is the fact that she wants to be different and she wants to be unique. My fear is that she will one day drive herself into the ground through exhaustion but that there would have been a fire, not a flame, ablaze the industry for the time she was around to pave new paths for future music generations to come.

Moody Monday : Surprise, “I’m GAY!”

by kranARI

No, not me. I’m talking about People magazine featuring a cover of an alleged “country singer” coming out this week. Well, the idea is to do a piece on artists that might be gay and might not know about it yet (insert humour where appropriate). I searched long and hard to find the most “Gay-looking” photos I could get my hands on. The rest is pure speculation…

kristen_stewart

KRISTEN STEWART

After being cast as the lead female character “Joan Jett” in the Runaways, it didn’t take much for the tabloids to start dissing on poor Kristen Stewart and her sexuality. I personally think her hair is super HOT short – and even though she’s got the whole tomboy energy mastered, have you seen her Interview Magazine photo shoot?

ELLEN PAGE

Must I mention the Marie-Claire photo shoot she did with Drew Barrymore  she did in 2009 with the to of them kissing and mounting each other? I rest my case.

lena-headey

LENA HEADEY

This is purely wishful thinking seeing that the girl is married to a dude, but hey that haircut doesn’t leave much to the imagination as well as the fact that she’s played the big L four times in roles portrayed. (Imagine me & You, The Brothers Grimm, Mrs Dalloway and Devil’s Band). Good on you Lena, for embracing the “other side”.

kathryn-bigelow

KATHRYN BIGELOW

I don’t know what your experience is of women directors but mine is purely this : women that feel they have to dress like men and be tough but sexy and take charge – which ROCKS my world. KB is without a doubt one of those. Going around being photographed in her tough-looking leather jackets and my God, if you haven’t yet seen her in Steven Spielberg’s music video for Martini Ranch’s “Reach” please do. Her Dirty Harry Impression is DEAD ON.

Michelle Rodriguez

MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ

There’s been a lot of speculation in the tabloids about this lovely lady, and my feeling is that, if she is gay she knows it, she just doesn’t say so and good on her. I’m gonna go with the theory that she will not be the one coming out on this week’s issue. She’ll probably want to hone in all that masculine energy and use it in several future combat/kick-ass roles to come.

annie-lennox

ANNIE LENOX

Am I the only one here thinking this icon of an artist has always been somewhat closeted? Be it her wardrobe, haircut or deep set voice, me thinks either way, there is definitely something that makes me wonder.

Pink_Alecia_Moore

PINK

Hell yeah! I bet a lot of you are thinking, “I wish”! I doubt it will ever happen because even though she cuts off trees and burns the house down in her videos, this girl is head over heels for her cute hubby Carey Hart.

Rumer Willis

RUMER WILLIS

Um, yeah. So when is this going to happen? She’s actually a sweetie to tell the truth and has been trying really hard lately to fall out of her natural boyish looks. I applaud her. Who wants to fall into a stereotype based on hair and body image?

Tina Fey

TINA FEY

This is the scene. Tina Fey and her husband are out on a night on the town and as they sit down to dinner she pulls out her lipstick and starts to apply.

HUSBAND : T, I think we need to face facts.

TINA : What do you mean honey?

HUSBAND : This is the thing – I think you’re GAY.

(lipstick falls to the side of the mouth)

TINA: What makes you say that?

HUSBAND: Well, I mean just look at you. You’re super smart, write and produce your own show, women love you and…well, you wear Converse shoes all the time. I mean, just look at the length of you nails!

TINA: (looks down in shame)
